Colds
For minor symptoms:
1. Get rest and drink plenty of fluids
2.Take pain relievers: ibuprofen, aspirin, acetaminophen (do not use aspirin for children under 16)
3. Take a decongestant such as Sudafed to relieve nasal congestion, but do not use if you have high blood pressure.
4. Take a cough suppressant such as Robitussin DM for hacking cough
See your health care clinician if:
5.Cold or cough lingers more than one week.
6. Fever persists for more than a few days.
7. You have painful breathing or shortness of breath.
8.You have discolored mucous.
9. You have severe headache or sinus pain.
Allergies or Itchy Eyes
For minor symptoms:
1. Avoid the problem agent if possible
2. Take an antihistamine: Benadryl, chlorpheniramine, or Claritin
3. Use eye drops such as Naphcon-A for allergic conjunctivitis
4. Use a decongestant such as Sudafed for nasal congestion, but do not use if you have high blood pressure
5. Apply hydrocortisone cream to bites or allergic skin rash
See your health care clinician if:
6. Throat or chest tightness, swelling of lips or tongue — call immediately.
7. Problem recurs frequently or doesn't respond to over-the-counter medications.
