The Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary or Mudumalai Bird Sanctuary, spreading
in an area of 321 sq. km, is situated in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is located
near the Bandipur National Park and separated from it just by the River Moyar
that flows between the two. Mudumalai Wildlife sanctuary or the Mudumalai Bird
Sanctuary was the first sanctuary in southern India. With its varied terrain
comprising of hills, ravines and swamps and the numerous variety of animal and
plant species, the park is a favoured destination for nature lovers and wildlife
enthusiasts.

The park consists of varied vegetation. The hilly terrain and the tropical
climate make it suitable for a wide variety of flora and fauna. Some of the
tree species found here include bamboos, natural teak, Anogeissus latifolia,
Terminalia, Terminalia Tomontosa, Grewia, Indian Labumusum, Aredesia and Solanancea
The park provides a place where you can catch a glimpse of a legion of animals
and birds. Some of the animals found in the park include elephants, gaur, banner,
macaque, langur, tigers, leopards, chital, panther, sloth bear, python, barking
deer, four horned antelope, crocodiles, giant flying squirrel, sambar, hyena,
wild dog, wild boar, mouse deer, spotted deer, jackal, hare, porcupine and mongoose.
The wildlife reserve, also a Bird Park, houses a wide variety of birds including
peacock, grey jungle fowl, red spur fowl, grey partridge quails, goggle eyed
plower, malabar whistling thrush, large racket-tailed dronge, the magpie-robin,
spotted babbler, small green barbet, green pigeons, brown dove, malabar grey
hornbill, bulbuls, mynahs, eagles, hawks, buzzards, harriers, falcons etc. The
migratory birds visiting the place during the winters are another major attraction.

Mudumalai Accommodations arrangements are available within the sanctuary in
an elephant camp called Theppakkadu which houses a rest house. The camp provides
the thrill of living inside a jungle. Good quality hotels are also available
in all the major neighbouring cities from where the sanctuary can be reached

about 160 km from Mudumalai.
» By Rail - Mudumalai is situated at a distance of 65
km from Udhagamandalam Railway Station.
» By Road - Regular bus services connect all the major
neighbouring cities with the sanctuary. Gudalur is the nearest town, about 16
km from the sanctuary.
